The Basics

The various McLaren Vale wineries have different fee systems for tastings, but, as a general rule, expect to pay for wine tastings, both tutored and independent, vineyard or cellar tours, and food tastings if visiting independently. Some wineries, such as D’Arenberg, house informative sensory and multimedia displays and offer experiences from making your own wine to elaborate tasting menus.

Due to South Australia’s rigorous drunk-driving laws and its patchy public transport, many travelers visit the McLaren Vale wine region via organized tours with round-trip transfers. In addition to minivan tours and private tours, McLaren Vale bike tours are popular, which may include food and wine tastings. Select McLaren Vale winery tours also visit sites on the Fleurieu Peninsula, such as the coastal town of Victor Harbor.

Had an absolute blast with Greg visiting 5 different spots throughout mclaren vale. After conversation Greg made some cellar door reccomendations that were spot on and we went home very happy with many bottles of wine. Beautiful platter lunch as well. Highly reccomend and we will definitely return!

We cycled in rain, hail and sun- and it was all fabulous fun. I highly recommend this experience, even if my credit card it a bit exhausted from wine orders.

McLaren Vale Winery Small Group Tour with Wine Tasting and Lunch
If you’re looking for a tour of McLaren Vale look no further! The day started with prompt pickup by Ines (sorry if I spelt that wrong!) before picking up the only other two people on our tour, don’t worry though, the comfortable and clean Mercedes van only holds 8 maximum so you’re never part of a massive group On our way to McLaren Vale our guide offered highlights of the Adelaide CBD and surrounds before stopping at Moana Beach and a drive through Glenelg to show off some more of what South Australia has to offer. Our wineries for the day were Shingleback, Hugh Hamilton, Leconfield and DogRidge though these change with day and availability - my personal favourite was Hugh Hamilton and not just because of Bruce, one of Hugh’s dogs making himself at home in the cellar door, but due to the excellent service of Alison Lunch is included and was a fantastic platter of local products/produce Our guide even went to the extra effort of dropping me close to my AirBnb as it wasn’t too far out of the way which was really thoughtful and saved me the walk back from where I’d selected to be picked up

What McLaren Vale Wineries Should I Visit?

McLaren Vale winemakers have been working with grapes for well over a century, and every winery offers something different. Kay Brothers, established in 1892, is considered the oldest McLaren Vale winery that’s still in the founding family’s hands; d’Arenberg, whose deconstructed Cube building is a McLaren Vale landmark, is another popular stop; and Beresford Wines offers an elegant tasting pavilion.
