Kuranda Scenic Railway

Open daily 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Bunda St, Cairns, Queensland, 4870

The Basics

Most tours set out from Cairns, Port Douglas, or the northern beaches, from where it’s a two-hour one-way journey to the end of the line at Kuranda. Passengers can choose standard heritage carriages or the more luxurious Gold Class or Royale Class service, in which refreshments are served. For the best value, combine your tour with other North Queensland activities such as a ride on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, an Army Duck tour of the Rainforestation Nature Park, a helicopter ride over the Great Barrier Reef, or a visit to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.

Perfect Day!
Such history! Professional staff, amazing views and fantastic history. A lovely pace. Recommend the rail first and the cableway in the afternoon after a lovely lunch in Kuranda.

It was great experience and really loved all the activities. Worth it. We had an amazing time. The kangaroos we saw in the wildlife were so cute and the tour driver was so nice person. Friendly people and great discovery.

Great trip, lots to do and the Rainforestation was so much better than expected. Sad to see the markets at Kuranda village only half still open. Regardless of how scared you are, do not miss the Skyrail!

The scenic railway section was unbelievable. The service on the Gold Class (hay) started the trip off with style and service. Would highly recommend this tour purely on the customer service from Shay and the other staff of the scenic railway.

Worth the train and sky rail components

Kuranda Scenic Railway Day Trip from Cairns
The train ride, river cruise and sky rail are fantastic. Unfortunately in this quiet period with borders still closed the town basically closes around 1330-1400. Went to the main pub for lunch only to find it closed at 1320. The bird and butterfly attractions are at the top of the town so you need to hussle to visit them I assume it stays open later in high season but a bit disappointed with Kuranda itself

Kuranda Scenic Railway Day Trip from Cairns
Adventure started by getting picked up at my motel and dropped off to the train for the journey to Kuranda. The train went through scenic country. When finally arrived in Kuranda, exploring what the town had to offer. On the way home, hoped onto the skyrail for a relaxing time.

Natural Landscapes of the Wet Tropics

The Kuranda Scenic Railway runs right through the heart of the UNESCO-protected Wet Tropics, climbing through the jungle-clad mountains of the Barron Gorge. Jump off along the way to marvel at the Barron Falls, admire Stoney Creek Falls, or take a hike through the ancient woodlands, looking out for wildlife such as rainbow lorikeets, wild orchids, and Lumholtz’s tree-kangaroos.
