The Basics

Whether you arrive in Dubrovnik by sea or land, the towering city walls will be the first thing you see, and there’s no escaping their presence. The most adventurous way to explore the ancient walls is to walk their entire length, while Dubrovnik walking tours often include a visit to popular lookouts such as the Pile Gate or the Minceta Tower. For the best views of the walls themselves, opt for a boat cruise or sea kayaking excursion and gaze up at the mighty ramparts from the ocean.

Great Tour!
Very informative tour. Our guide Davor was well prepared, shared a lot of history and provided some helpful tips . Did the morning tour; a lot of walking, but well worth the amazing views from the walls. Really enjoyed it.

Dubrovnik City Walls Walk
Fantastic tour, I couldn’t recommend the 5pm slot enough, the view across the city as it changes colours leading up to sunset are phenomenal. Desa our guide was engaging and interesting, I learnt a lot and also got tips for the rest of my stay. Do it on day 1 if you can :)

Private Dubrovnik City Walls & City Tour
Josip was a great guide around the city. He explained the rich History of Dubrovnik and the major highlights within the city walls. Also as an old city native he shared good lunch and dinner spots. As well as his experience during the 90s war. Recommend highly to take this tour.

Walking the old walls of Dubrovnik is a must do. You get a whole different view of the city from up there. My teenage daughters and I all enjoyed it very much. There can be a bit of climbing but it’s quite manageable. The views of the old town and sea made it all worthwhile!

Dubrovnik City Walls Walking Tour (entrance ticket included)
I really enjoyed this walking tour. Nora had so much knowledge about the history of the region and the buildings we saw. She answered all my questions and had some great recommendations about things to do after the tour. Highly recommended!

Dubrovnik Super Saver: Mt Srd Cable Car Ride plus Old Town and City Walls Walking Tour
Guide did a fabulous job. Wish she included the wall in her tour. Perhaps not how the tour was designed. But after 3 hours we were too tired to then walk the wall on our own. As we came back to the wall in the evening, we were told we can go in till 7pm. But the guards started asking people to leave within 28 mins. So much of the wall was missed from the experience.

Dubrovnik Walks - Ancient City Walls & Wars 2h Walking Tour
Dubrovnik's city walls are not to be missed while in the city with the great views, and our friendly guide Jadranka helped elevate the experience by bringing us through the history of Dubrovnik, from the construction of Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik's relationships with it's neighbours and also the more recent Homeland War in the 90s.

Davor was an incredible guide and made the tours fun. The Walls tour was incredible. Very interesting with amazing views. The Old Town tour (for which the company changed the time on us the day before) was much less interesting. Davor made it better with a few great stories, but in general the tour was not worth it.

I loved walking the wall, it was a great experience, and the views were fantastic. I would do it again if I came back.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is a one-way (counterclockwise) system operating on the walls, so once you start walking, you must continue until the next exit point.

  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water in summer, as there is little shade atop the walls.

  • Wear comfortable shoes.

  • Due to the many steps and uneven ground, the walls are not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

How to Get There

Dubrovnik’s ancient city walls encircle Old Town and are reachable on foot from anywhere in the city’s historic center. The walls’ main entrance is at the Pile Gate on the western wall, but you can also enter from the Minceta Tower in the north and the Ploce Gate in the east.

When to Get There

Dubrovnik’s city walls are open to the public year-round, although opening times vary throughout the year. The walls can get busy during the peak summer months, so it’s best to make an early start to beat the crowds. Avoid walking between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest.

Walking the Dubrovnik City Walls

The best way to experience the walls of Dubrovnik is to hike the 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) circular route, which loops around all of Old Town. Start by climbing up to the ramparts above the Pile Gate, pass the Minceta Tower and Fort Lovrijenac (one of several Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik), and then continue to the Ploce Gate and around the Old City Harbor. Along the way, enjoy spectacular ocean views and admire landmarks including the Dominican Monastery, Revelin Fortress, Mount Srd, and 15th-century Bokar Fortress.
