The safari is very good experience. The guide is friendly, not very long waiting because there are many truck/bus. The others are just ok, only 1 bird in aviary also strangely not many kangooroos.

Giraffes on the Savanna. We were lucky but we had a wonderful driver and Guide Jill. She was a great provider of information about the first Nations people whose land the Zoo is on and the real purpose of the Zoo to save endangered species like the Mongolian wild horses and Oryx and the Zoos relationships throughout the world and in particular Africa.

We enjoyed seeing a few animals in person which answers the kids imagination. We would love to visit again with our friends and relatives. And will probably feel the same excitement as what we felt yesterday. Zoo animals are really fantastic.

The hippo water park...

The hippo water park watching the kids faces and the bus ride. A bit disappointed that you take the lions away when you have a big crowd there looking, staff member came out and put a sign out but said nothing and we are all standing there waiting for the girls to come around. We pay to see the animals not to see empty pens.

Awesome upgrade
Katrina L, Oct 2019
Off-Road Safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo
The off-road safari was a great optional upgrade to the regular free safari that is offered at Werribee as you get to go a bit closer to the animals & you have a chance to stop and observe as your guide explains more in depth about them. It rained on the day we were there so it was quite chilly - they do have blankets but just be prepared for the weather! Something to note if you are planning to go to Werribee Open Range Zoo without your own vehicle is that though there is a bus to and from the Metro station, it does not come very often so you should plan accordingly. There are taxis waiting at the Metro station that can take you to the zoo but no taxis waiting at the zoo for the trip back. There is a tourist information center by the entrance that can help.

When to Get There

The zoo is open daily year-round. It can get crowded in peak season (December and January), as well as on weekends and public holidays throughout the year. For the best wildlife watching, visit in cooler weather, when the animals are more likely to be active—they tend to hide out in the shade during the hottest periods.

Wildlife Watching at the Werribee Open Range Zoo

Hop aboard an open vehicle and venture off-road through the Werribee grasslands, where you’ll search for rhinoceros, buffalo, antelope, African wild dog, or prowling prides of lions. See vervet monkeys, as they swing through the treetops, watch hippopotamus splashing around in the river, or spot zebras out grazing on the plains. Other top sightings include endangered species such as western lowland gorillas, desert dwellers like camels and ostriches, and native Australian animals such as kangaroos, emu, koalas, and eastern barred bandicoots.
