The Basics

Watching the nightly Penguin Parade is a popular pastime. There are three self-guided viewing options available: general viewing, which allows access to the viewing stand overlooking the beach; the penguins-plus viewing area, which offers a much closer look at the penguins; and the underground viewing area, which lets you view the penguins at eye level. Guided Penguin Parade tours offer greater insight into the penguins and their daily routine.

Many Phillip Island tours and day trips from Melbourne include entrance to the Penguin Parade, often alongside other island attractions such as the Nobbies, the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, or Churchill Island.

I just want to give Alex a shoutout! He was really good and was keeping everybody alive and making sure everybody is enjoying the trip. It was a small group tour so it was really nice. This tour is a must when visiting Melbourne. The Penguin Parade is a mesmerizing experience, ti get your money’s worth, I recommend to get the VIP or the Ranger Guided tour. It’s so worth it.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Express Tour from Melbourne
It was really good tour! Penguins! It was an amazing experience. I and my family went tour with the tour guide Mr. Rob. He was very kind and knowledgeable not only to tour spots but also to daily life in Melbourne, so we really enjoy the way to the spots. The bus was spacious and the agency prepared kid-seat for my son, and it was very helpful to take care of safety. It was a good tour.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Day Trip with Koala Conservation Reserve Visit
The penguins were fascinating to watch, the scenery was beautiful, and the weather was perfect. We enjoyed walking on the beach and visiting the wildlife park. As we are above average in size, the bus seats were not as comfortable as I had hoped for a long trip of 12 hours.

Nice variety of activities

Small-Group Phillip Island Penguin Parade Day Tour from Melbourne
The tour itself was really great! Got to do a variety of activities and we did not feel rushed anywhere. The penguin viewing was fun, but we actually saw more closely the penguins when we walked back to the visitor center and saw them scurrying back to their borrows for the night. The reason for the loss of one star was some girls on the tour who, after the first stop, basically "stole" our seats on the bus, relegating us to the back.

Up close with penguins

Phillip Island Penguin, Brighton Beach, Moonlit Sanctuary from Melbourne
We really enjoyed the Phillip Island Penguin parade. We stood on a boardwalk that was only about 2 feet from these adorable little guys. It was in February so they were close to the time when they molt all their feathers at once. Because of this, they had some extra weight on them. They were adorable. A few of them were so heavy that they would only "walk" a few feet at a time and then flop onto their bellies to rest.

Small-Group Phillip Island Day Trip from Melbourne with Penguin Plus Viewing
There were 7 in our group and we all loved it! John Paul our tour guide was excellent and the chocolate factory is a must especially if you have children. The penguin experience is incredible! All of a sudden, hundreds of penguins show up on the beach and march to their homes. It's an hour of being in awe. It is cold so bring warm clothes.

How to Get There

The Penguin Parade takes place at Summerland Beach on Phillip Island, 87 miles (140 kilometers) south of Melbourne, off the Mornington Peninsula. Once on the island, it’s a 20-minute drive to Summerland Beach, depending on traffic. The site is easy to find, off the C473 road and close to the Nobbies. There's no public transport to the beach, so if you don’t have your own car, it’s best to join a tour.

Wildlife Experiences on Phillip Island

Animal lovers will find plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities around Phillip Island. Head to the Koala Conservation Centre to spot koalas, wallabies, and echidnas free-roaming in natural bushlands; admire Australia’s largest colony of fur seals at Seal Rocks; or set sail on a whale-watching cruise from Cowes Jetty (May–October only). You can also spot Aussie animals such as kangaroos, wombats, dingoes, and Tasmanian devils at the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Park or meet farmyard animals and watch sheepshearing demonstrations at the Churchill Island Heritage Farm.
