Once the largest and grandest of Rome’s private residences, the ancient ruins of the Villa of the Quintilii (Villa dei Quintili) are still an impressive sight today. Located along the legendary Appian Way (Via Appia), the lavish villa includes two impressive entrances, intact mosaic tiles and marble floors, and the remains of its private luxury baths, dating back to 151 AD.

Tour the ruins on a half-day trip from Rome to admire the rooms and artifacts on display, or cycle along the ancient Appian Way to visit the ruins and other ancient landmarks, like the Caracalla Baths and the Mausoleum of Caecilia Metella.

Rome Underground and Appian Way - private tour

Rome Underground and Appian Way - private tour

Experience the ancient “freeway” that was the Appian Way, the starting point for Roman traders and warriors journeying to the far eastern reaches of the Empire. Dating from 312 BCE, it was flanked by mausoleums, such as Cecilia Metella tomb, and villas, like Villa dei Quintilii, many of them built by Rome's most wealthy and famous families. More than anything it is the unmissable Christian Catacombs, the burial grounds of the earliest Christians who were laid to rest after death deep below the earth in maze-like underground galleries. Today, when you visit these tombs, you witness a remarkable insight into the formative early Christian community and, with the help of your guide, get a sense of how Chirstianity was born and how it developed towards what it is today.

Half-Day Private Tour to Appia and San Callisto Catacombs

Half-Day Private Tour to Appia and San Callisto Catacombs

The Appian Way is one of the seven original roads leading into Rome. It connected the capital to Brindisi in southern Italy and served as a strategic trade route with Greece and the East. The road is punctuated by important archaeological treasures, such as the Caracalla Baths, the second largest public baths of ancient Rome, and Villa Quintili, an ancient Roman mansion featuring beautiful marbles and sculptures. But the Appian Way has also a dark side, since it was here that the early Christians buried their dead bodies. During the tour you will descend into the Catacombs of San Callisto, Rome’s largest underground cemetery named after Pope Calixtus I. These date back to the 2nd century and became the official burial site of the Roman Church, housing the tombs of thousands of Christians, martyrs and popes, which earned them the nickname of “Little Vatican”.
