The Basics

The magnificent ruins of Diocletian’s Palace are not confined to a traditional archaeological site, but rather are part of the living, breathing heart of Croatia’s second-largest city. They can be seen during guided biking, Segway, and walking tours of Split as well as during food and wine tours. The ruins also feature onGame of Thrones location tours, with the HBO hit series having filmed scenes here. Organized day tours to Split from Dubrovnik, Zadar, Makarska, and Trogir typically include guided tours of Diocletian’s Palace.

Excellent tour
Brilliant walking tour. Our tour guide, Darko, was really entertaining and informative. He spoke extensively about the history of Split as well as local hints and tips about food and drink and places to see.

Split & Diocletian's Palace Walking Tour with optional Wine and Food Tasting
Good general tour of palace not much else to see downtown Split. This area of Split could be very crowded on peak tourist season. Not sure I’d enjoy the tour at that time.

Split & Diocletian's Palace Walking Tour with optional Wine and Food Tasting
I have been on quite a few walking tours and this was the best I have been on. Our guide Ivan (I probably didn't spell that correctly!) was so informative and entertaining. The tour was just the right length and packed full of interesting history about Split that I would never have known otherwise. I would highly recommend it for everyone visiting the city!

90-min Diocletian Palace Walking Tour with optional Wine and food Tasting
Ivan was such a great guide. Wow he knew so much about the history of Croatia and Diolecian’s Palace. We could have stayed and chatted with him for hours!!!! Ivan explained later the extensive schooling he needed to go through in order to be a guide and it blew us away! The tour started promptly and Ivan was funny and knowledgeable. Thank you so much for this awesome history lesson!

Split Shore Excursion: Diocletian Palace and Trogir Tour
This was a wonderful excursion. The Diocletian Palace is huge and would have been extremely difficult to navigate without a guide. Our guide, Kristina, took us to all of the highlights, including a performance by a group of tenors in a part of the palace with world renown acoustics, all the while avoiding the crowds. Trogir is a beautiful little island that was well worth the short trip.

Split Shore Excursion: Diocletian Palace and Trogir Tour
Tour and guide were good. A lot cheaper than what was offered by ship. Suggest better instructions of where to meet though. Hard to locate guide. Should say meet at display of town centre at end of shops on water front across road from palace. It is not a statue.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • One of the most magnificent Roman ruins in existence, Diocletian’s Palace is a must for ancient history aficionados.

  • Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, water, and sunscreen if exploring during the summer months as it can be hot and humid.

  • Some parts of the old town, including the palace’s underground ruins and the Riva seafront promenade, which is bordered by the palace’s southern facade, are wheelchair accessible, though large parts are not.

When to Get There

Diocletian’s Palace is enchanting at any time of the year, though May, June, and September strike an appealing balance, promising sunny weather but fewer crowds. Summer is prime visitor season, and tourist numbers and temperatures both peak in July and August. During these months, come first thing in the morning to avoid the afternoon rush.

Navigating Diocletian’s Palace

Finding your way around the alleyways, hidden courtyards, and twisting and turning streets can be difficult for first-timers. Use the gates to help get your bearings: Golden Gate is located in the north wall, Bronze Gate (or Brass Gate) in the south, Silver Gate to the east, and Iron Gate to the west. Kresimirova Street, Split’s Decumanus Maximus, runs directly between the east and west gates, dividing the palace in two: To the south was the emperor’s imperial residence, while the northern section housed soldiers and servants.
