Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Your Rottnest Island ferry departs from either Perth or Fremantle, depending on option selected when booking. If leaving from Perth, you’ll cruise down the Swan River through the city to reach Fremantle, from where it’s about a 25-minute ride across the ocean to "Rotto," as it’s known to locals.

When you arrive, you are free to explore the island—and its 63 beaches and 20 bays—however you wish. There are plenty of spots to get wet with a swim, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard or surf, or just relax on the sand and watch yachts bobbing in the water. The most popular activity for visitors is renting a bike on the island to cruise leisurely along the scenic roads, where no cars are allowed. If you’re interested in history, check out sites like Lomas Cottage, Rottnest Island Museum, Pilot Boathouse or the Salt Store and Exhibition Centre. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for wildlife, particularly the island’s native quokkas. (All entrance fees, activities, rentals, food and drinks are at your own expense.)

At the end of your full day on the island, head back to Fremantle or Perth on the return ferry.

Rottnest Express to Rottnest island

Booked our reservation just the night before the trip and arranged for hotel pick up. Hotel pick up not possible for that short lead time so we just walked to the terminal at Elizabeth Quay 1 hr before departure and got there in 15 min from Pan Pacific Perth. Along the way we saw nice views of Langley Park and the Swan river. The trip to Rottnest island pushed through and overall it was wonderful. The staff were professional and we got our money's worth.

Quick trip

Bought tickets thru Viator and had to redeem at Fremantle ticket office, this was easy and hassle free, there were long lines to get on ferry but it moved fairly quickly, the ferry service put on 2 ferries for the 9.30am service and they had signs up saying gates closed at 9.25am and you wouldn’t be allowed to board after this time but at 9.45am they were still letting stragglers on, unfair to those onboard waiting, return journey was smooth and uneventful, leaving Rottnest at the exact departure time as advertised. We left from Fremantle rather than Perth as one of our party wasn’t good on the water so it’s a much shorter trip across to the island from Fremantle.
